Visit of Swedish team for learning solar cooking
The Barli Development Institute for Rural Women hosted an international team of
students from Falu Fri gymnasium (Sweden) on 4-5 November 2011, and taught them the
basics of solar cooking technologies, especially the operation and cooking methods on
SK14 solar cookers. Three teachers and ten students attended the program in which, on
the first day the Director of the institute Mrs Tahera Jadhav, welcomed the guests and
briefed them about the institute. This was followed by a tour of the institute, a
presentation on its working and a birds-eye view of its training and developmental
activities. The students learned about solar cooking, organic agriculture techniques, batik
and block printing, energy saving through briquette-making and other training activities
conducted at the institute. On the 5th November, the Chief operating officer of the
institute, Mr Yogesh Jadhav presented the technical details of solar cooking and their
practical aspects of working in the field. The presentation session and field visit was
assisted by Ms Elisa Kohnlein, a volunteer from Germany. This was followed by hands-on
experience of cooking on SK14 solar cookers and Scheffler cooker which was assisted by
Ms Sewanti and Ms Rekha, recent graduates of the institute. The Swedish students also
got a taste of delicious solar cooked lunch hosted by the director, which was appreciated
by one and all. As a follow-up of this learning exercise, the team also purchased three
SK14 solar cookers which they will install and donate to tribal communities in Kanha
National Park.
